Gran Sasso hikers spark safety concerns with inadequate gear

Images of a hiker wearing only swimwear and flip-flops or going barefoot while traversing the Direttissima route of Corno Grande on the Gran Sasso massif have gone viral, sparking controversy among hikers and authorities.

The Abruzzo Alpine and Speleological Rescue Corps (CNSAS) has confirmed the authenticity of the photos and issued a warning regarding mountain safety. Officials emphasized that the Direttissima is not a standard hiking trail; it features technical sections and exposed passages that require physical preparation, experience, and appropriate equipment to prevent serious injury from slips.

This incident follows a series of warnings from the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park regarding irresponsible behavior in the protected area, including illegal camping, ignoring boundaries, and feeding wildlife. CNSAS noted that the current summer season has already seen a high number of rescue interventions due to inadequate preparation and environmental conditions.
