Granada and Cádiz Launch Major Historic Building Renovations
The Granada City Council has started archaeological surveys for the comprehensive restoration of Casa Ágreda, a 16th‑century Renaissance palace in the Albaicín district. The €4.1 million project, co‑financed by the Large Cities Tourism Plan, will convert the monument into a cultural, exhibition and museum hub, bolstering Granada’s bid for European Capital of Culture 2031. Work will consolidate the structure, improve energy efficiency and preserve Mudéjar ceilings, the former chapel and the monumental façade, creating 1,389 m² of usable space, with over 800 m² dedicated to flexible exhibition and educational activities.
In the historic centre of the province of Cádiz, the local heritage commission approved the adaptive‑reuse of the long‑abandoned Barja Street school. The plan will transform the building into nine residential units, installing an elevator, a glazed roof over the courtyard and interior restructuring while retaining original architectural elements. The conversion is part of a wider effort to rehabilitate historic structures, attract new residents and visitors, and stimulate urban regeneration.
