Granada experiences intense seismic activity following Alhendín earthquakes

The province of Granada, Spain, is experiencing an intense seismic sequence known as the ‘Alhendín seismic series’. Since mid-August, the National Geographic Institute (IGN) has recorded over 1,400 tremors, with more than 100 felt by the public.

Two major earthquakes, both measuring 4.8 in magnitude, occurred on August 15 in Alhendín and August 18 in Gójar. These shallow tremors were felt across more than 500 locations, including parts of Málaga, Córdoba, Jaén, Almería, Murcia, and even as far as Madrid. The activity has caused notable material damage, evacuations, and minor injuries.

Geologist Raúl Pérez López from the Spanish Geological and Mining Institute (IGME-CSIC) noted that earthquakes with a magnitude over 4 in southern and southeastern Spain are not unusual due to local fault lines. While the region has the potential for magnitude 5 or 6 events, experts emphasize that statistical averages cannot be used to predict exactly when the next significant earthquake will occur.
