Granada holds religious ceremonies for patron saints

Religious observances are taking place in Granada to honor local patrons and seek protection following recent seismic activity.

For the first time in 44 years, the floral offering to the Virgen de las Angustias is being held at the Granada Cathedral rather than the Basilica. Due to the mandatory transfer of the patron image to the Sagrario, the Cathedral's main facade serves as the centerpiece for the event. The ceremony includes a special procession layout with separate routes for the public and official institutions, and features helicopters from the Air Base dropping carnations from the sky.

Additionally, a rogative procession was held featuring the Santísimo Cristo de San Agustín. Led by the Archbishop and attended by municipal authorities, the procession served as both a plea for divine protection and a gesture of thanks for the lack of fatalities during the earthquakes that struck Granada and surrounding towns in August. The event follows a period of uncertainty and damage to local housing that had previously necessitated the temporary closure of several diocesan temples, including the Cathedral.
