Granada inaugurates monument to naval hero Álvaro de Bazán
On October 7, 2026, a monument was inaugurated in Granada to honor Álvaro de Bazán y Guzmán, the 1st Marquess of Santa Cruz. The ceremony marks 455 years since the Battle of Lepanto, where Bazán played a decisive role.
The initiative to commemorate the naval hero is the result of a two-year effort led by the Spanish Navy and the Álvaro de Bazán Association 500 Years, with support from the local government of Granada. The project included various cultural activities, such as conferences, exhibitions, and publications, aimed at restoring the historical recognition of the undefeated mariner.
The monument is located in the plaza at the end of the street named after the hero and was attended by civil authorities, cultural representatives, and the chiefs of the Spanish Army, Navy, and Air Force.
