Granada earthquake triggers evacuations and minor injuries FAST-MOVING

A series of earthquakes has struck the Granada province in southern Spain, following a significant magnitude 5.2 tremor on Friday, August 15. On Tuesday, August 18, a major quake measuring between 4.7 and 4.8 magnitude occurred at approximately 10:37 AM, with its epicenter located in Gójar.

The seismic activity has caused material damage across the region, including fallen trees, damaged vehicles, and debris from building facades and roofs. At least three people, including one minor, sustained minor injuries.

In response to the ongoing tremors, authorities have taken several precautionary measures. The Alhambra complex has evacuated the Nasrid Palaces and the Alcazaba to allow for structural inspections. The Granada City Council has ordered the temporary closure of municipal buildings and facilities, and the Granada Metro has reduced train speeds to 30 km/h. The Junta de Andalucía remains in an emergency phase of its seismic risk response plan.
