Granada prosecutors reduce sentencing requests in Marchelo case
The prosecution has reduced its sentencing requests in the final segment of the Marchelo case, following significant delays in the legal process. In the latest session at the Granada Court of Appeals, prosecutors requested prison sentences not exceeding seven months for the accused, down from previous requests of 18 to 21 months. This reduction accounts for the mitigating factor of undue delays in a macro-case that has spanned nearly twenty years.
The specific segment of the case involves alleged irregularities regarding the licensing and construction of a gas station in Alhendín dating back to 2002. The defendants include the former Urban Planning Councilor, Manuel Fernández, two other former council members, a municipal architect, and two entrepreneurs. The charges involve influence peddling and urban planning malfeasance.
The case originated from allegations that the former mayor, José Guerrero, negotiated the sale of his own property for the construction of the service station on land classified for intensive single-family housing. Due to health reasons, the case against the former mayor, who is in his nineties, has been provisionally archived.
