Granadilla de Abona to build 40 burial niches amid cemetery shortage

The Granadilla de Abona City Council has unanimously approved a modification to its investment annex to construct 40 new burial niches. This measure serves as a temporary solution to address the lack of space in the municipal cemetery while the process for a larger expansion, which aims to add over 200 niches, is being processed.

Mayor José Domingo Regalado noted that the administrative period between the tender publication and the commencement of works will take at least six months. To fund this project, approximately 50,000 euros will be reallocated from funds originally intended for the improvement of the Chimiche civic center. The maintenance and improvement of the civic center will instead be managed through an assignment to the municipal public company, Sermugran.

Opposition members have questioned the decision, arguing that addressing the cemetery shortage should not necessitate the substitution of other planned investments.
