Grand Canyon flash flood leaves one dead and 15 missing

A severe flash flood struck the Bright Angel Canyon and Phantom Ranch areas of Grand Canyon National Park on Saturday afternoon, causing significant casualties and infrastructure damage.

The National Park Service reported that one 46-year-old man was found dead near Crystal Rapids on the Colorado River, while approximately 15 people remain missing or unaccounted for. Emergency responders successfully evacuated 62 people from the affected areas via helicopter.

The flooding caused extensive damage to the park's infrastructure, destroying nearly all footbridges over Bright Angel Creek and altering the landscape by widening the creek bed. Additionally, the Transcanyon Waterline, a critical 12.5-mile pipeline, was damaged, leading to water conservation mandates for residents and tourists.

As a result of the damage and ongoing search operations, authorities have closed several key areas, including Phantom Ranch, Bright Angel Campground, and the North Kaibab Trail. Overnight accommodations in park lodges and hotels are suspended starting Monday. Officials warn that further thunderstorms and heavy rain could trigger additional flash floods, debris flows, and rockfalls through Monday.
