Grand Canyon flash floods kill two and leave one missing

Flash flooding in the Grand Canyon has resulted in at least two deaths and left one person missing. The flooding, which heavily impacted Bright Angel Canyon and the Phantom Ranch area, prompted the evacuation of approximately 80 people.

Significant infrastructure damage has been reported, specifically to the 12.5-mile Transcanyon Waterline, which supplies the South Rim. Preliminary assessments indicate that roughly 40 percent of the pipeline has been damaged or destroyed. As a result, the National Park Service has suspended overnight accommodations and lodge stays within the park and implemented emergency water restrictions for residents and visitors.

Search and recovery efforts are ongoing, with teams utilizing cadaver dogs and specialized equipment to locate the missing individual. Authorities have closed several key areas, including Phantom Ranch, Bright Angel Campground, and the North Kaibab Trail, until further notice. The economic impact on the region is expected to be substantial due to the disruption of tourism and lodging services.
