Grand Canyon geological gap may be explained by ancient mega-escarpment
Researchers have proposed a new explanation for the ‘Great Unconformity,’ a massive geological gap in the Grand Canyon where approximately 1 to 1.2 billion years of rock layers are missing. A study published in the journal Geology suggests that a colossal, half-mile-high cliff system, referred to as the ‘Great Escarpment of Laurentia,’ was responsible for exposing the canyon’s oldest basement rocks.
This mega-escarpment is believed to have formed roughly 800 million years ago during the tectonic breakup of the ancient supercontinent Rodinia. Using advanced plate tectonic reconstructions and data modeling, the research team determined that these towering cliffs likely stretched thousands of miles across ancient North America, potentially reaching areas such as modern-day Arizona, Utah, Texas, Oklahoma, and Missouri.
The study suggests that this geological feature facilitated the removal of roughly 10 kilometers of rock and may have interacted with ancient glaciers to create the uneven erosion patterns observed in the canyon today. The position of this ancient escarpment aligns with similar massive cliff structures currently found along the coastlines of Africa and Brazil.
