Grand Central receives approval for digital signaling fleet
Grand Central has secured regulatory approval to equip its Class 180 fleet with the European Train Control System (ETCS), a significant step in the digital signaling rollout on the UK’s East Coast Main Line.
The fleet of 10 vehicles, retrofitted by Alstom, will undergo software updates and a 50,000-mile fault-free testing period starting in December. Drivers are also undergoing training for Level National Train Control (L-NTC) mode to operate ETCS-fitted trains over conventional routes.
As part of the East Coast Digital Programme (ECDP), digital in-cab signaling (ETCS Level 2) is expected to be operational between Welwyn and Hitchin by spring 2027. The transition to digital systems aims to enhance safety, increase capacity, and improve service reliability and punctuality by allowing for real-time monitoring and automated speed supervision.
