Grand Central slashing victims seek to sue NYC over subway security

Two elderly victims of a machete attack at New York City’s Grand Central subway station are seeking permission to sue the city. Leila Sumulong, 70, and Jose Fermin, 84, are pursuing legal action, alleging that authorities failed to provide adequate security at the transit hub.

The attack occurred on April 11 at the 42nd Street-Grand Central station. Anthony Griffin, 44, allegedly attacked three people with a 17-inch machete. One victim, a 65-year-old man, sustained severe head injuries, including an open skull fracture. Griffin was fatally shot by police after he reportedly refused to drop the weapon and threatened officers.

Represented by attorney Joseph Napoli, the victims are filing a late notice of claim against the city, the NYPD, and the MTA, citing physical injuries and PTSD. The NYPD has defended its response, stating that officers attempted to de-escalate the situation before using lethal force.
