Grand Central Terminal to expand dining options amid MTA budget shortfalls

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is launching a major expansion of hospitality businesses at Grand Central Terminal to diversify food and beverage options and generate revenue. The initiative includes a mix of fine dining and quick-service outlets, utilizing various spaces within the historic hub.

Key developments include the opening of Osteria Centrale, a 250-seat restaurant and Mercato Centrale grab-and-go market, in a space previously occupied by a Rite Aid. Other planned conversions include turning an elevator shaft into a grab-and-go counter and repurposing a former bank ATM area into a new bar and cafe.

This expansion is driven by increased foot traffic from new Midtown East office buildings and a need to address significant budget shortfalls. The MTA anticipates a $300 million deficit for fiscal year 2027, which is projected to reach $500 million by 2028.
