Grand Magal of Touba faces severe rainstorm warnings and health mobilization

Senegal's civil aviation and meteorology agency ANACIM has issued a warning for an extensive rain‑storm sequence across much of the country from 31 July to 3 August 2026. Heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected to hit southern regions such as Ziguinchor, Kolda and Sédhiou first, then spread to the east (Kédougou, Tambacounda, Matam), the centre, and northern departments (Linguère, Louga, Podor, Saint‑Louis). The capital region and Touba – the site of the Grand Magal pilgrimage scheduled for 2 August – are also included, prompting calls for vigilance and travel adjustments.

In preparation for the pilgrimage, Touba’s sub‑prefect Djidiack Kital confirmed that hospitals, health centres and posts are fully mobilised to handle the influx of worshippers. About 80 sanitation agents will conduct disinfection, pest control and dusting operations across the city. Officials highlighted the logistical scale and the broader economic impact of the Magal, noting significant state investment in water, infrastructure and sanitation to support the millions of pilgrims expected.
