Grand Teton National Park euthanizes black bear due to visitor behavior

Grand Teton National Park officials euthanized a black bear last Friday following a pattern of dangerous behavior near Delta Lake. The decision came after the bear repeatedly approached visitors and received multiple human food rewards, leading to food-conditioned behavior.

Park staff reported that the bear became unusually difficult to haze away from people. Management determined that the animal's escalating proximity to humans and its comfort with human food posed an unacceptable safety risk to visitors and staff. The bear was immobilized with a dart and euthanized on-site, with its carcass flown out of the area the following morning.

In a statement, the park emphasized that the animal was lethally removed due to “poor decisions made by park visitors.” Officials urged the public to keep bears wild by never leaving food unattended and gathering all belongings immediately if a bear approaches.
