Grand Teton study explains dim park lighting vs streetlights
Research conducted in Grand Teton National Park in the United States found that most visitors prefer park lighting that is softer and warmer than typical streetlights. Warm amber‑tinted lamps, combining red and white light, are reported to be easier on the eyes at night, improve night‑time visibility of the sky and wildlife, and reduce glare.
The study also showed that bright, high‑intensity lighting can disrupt nocturnal animals. Insects, bats and migratory birds rely on natural moon and starlight for navigation; strong artificial light traps insects, alters bat activity, and interferes with predator‑prey relationships. Visitors have even asked where to purchase amber‑colored bulbs for home use after experiencing the park’s lighting system.
