Grand Theft Auto V successfully runs in Google Chrome via WebAssembly

A technical community project successfully executed Grand Theft Auto V directly within the Google Chrome web browser, bypassing the need for a traditional full installation. The project utilized leaked source code compiled into WebAssembly to allow the game to run locally within the browser engine rather than relying on standard cloud streaming services.

To achieve this, developers used aggressive texture decompression and dynamic loading of audio and models, reducing the initial download to approximately 700 MB, a significant decrease from the standard PC version which exceeds 100 GB. On modern hardware, such as Apple's M3 Pro chip, the demonstration reached a performance of 60 FPS.

The unofficial project was hosted on a specific domain but was taken offline shortly after gaining attention on social media. While it is speculated that the removal was due to copyright and trademark claims by Rockstar Games, official confirmation regarding the shutdown has not been provided.
