Italy manages summer exodus and school year preparations
Italy is experiencing a major summer exodus, with Anas estimating over 27 million vehicle movements on national roads and highways through September 6. High traffic alerts are expected on major routes connecting tourist areas to metropolitan centers, including the Autostrada del Mediterraneo, the A2, and various state roads in Sicily, Calabria, and Lazio. To mitigate congestion, Anas has temporarily suspended 1,175 roadworks.
Simultaneously, the Italian Ministry of Education and Merit has completed staffing for the 2026/2027 school year. Over 37,430 new teachers have been hired, an increase from the previous year, alongside 342 school principals and approximately 118,000 substitute positions. In Sicily, the start of the school year faces local challenges. The municipality of Rosolini has postponed its school opening to September 21 to allow for emergency pest control following extreme heat. While regional officials have resisted a general delay for the entire island, citing legal requirements for school duration, discussions continue regarding the need for better climate control and facility maintenance in Sicilian schools.
