Grande Cayes landfill access restored in Saint Martin

After more than two weeks of blockage caused by the saturation of compartment No. 10, private waste‑transport companies regained access to the Grande Cayes landfill on 30 July. A temporary arrangement was reached between the Collectivity of Saint Martin, the Direction de l’environnement, de l’aménagement et du logement (DEAL) and the site operator Verde SXM.

Under the agreement, waste carriers can unload their trucks in the same non‑compliant zone currently used by the Collectivity for household waste, even though no new prefectoral permit has been issued. The site must be brought into compliance within 14 months, after which the prefecture will issue a formal notice. Once the notice is received, the Collectivity will have three weeks to relocate waste that has been stored there since 13 July to the authorized storage area.
