Grandtully's St Mary's Church Revealed as Scotland's Rare 1600s Painted Ceiling Treasure

St Mary's Church in Grandtully, near Aberfeldy in Perthshire, Scotland, has been highlighted as a hidden cultural gem after a TikTok video by creator John Murray showcased its exceptionally rare painted ceiling. The ceiling, dating from the early 1600s, is one of only two surviving painted church ceilings in Scotland that remain in their original setting.

Historic Environment Scotland notes that the church was likely built around 1533 when Alexander Stewart of Grandtully Castle granted lands to St Andrews Cathedral for a priest. References to a church at the site appear in papal letters as early as 1250, suggesting a long religious history. Murray describes the modest exterior as resembling a barn, but urges visitors to step inside to experience the remarkable interior artwork.
