Granit Xhaka faces investigation over COVID-19 certificate

Swiss national football team captain Granit Xhaka is under criminal investigation by the Lucerne Prosecutor's Office regarding the suspected use of a falsified COVID-19 vaccination certificate in 2022. Xhaka admitted to obtaining the certificate, stating he acted out of “deep mistrust” and “fear” regarding the vaccine, calling his decision a mistake.

In a recent development, Xhaka’s physician, Andrea L., has contested the implications of his admission. She maintains that she personally vaccinated the player and that the certificate issued is truthful. The doctor’s medical practice in Lucerne remains open, though she faces potential professional disciplinary action, including a possible permanent ban on practicing medicine, depending on the outcome of the investigation.

As the investigation continues, Xhaka has stepped away from the Swiss national team during the Nations League period to focus on his family. The Swiss Football Association has stated they will re-evaluate his status following the international break. Xhaka is expected to testify before authorities in early December.
