Granit Xhaka admits to using forged Covid-19 certificate
Swiss national football team captain Granit Xhaka has admitted to obtaining a forged Covid-19 vaccination certificate during the pandemic. The Sunderland midfielder stated on social media that his decision was driven by deep mistrust, fear, and uncertainty regarding the vaccine. He expressed regret, calling the choice a mistake, and pledged full cooperation with authorities.
The Lucerne Prosecutor's Office is investigating the matter to determine if criminal offenses related to document forgery or fraudulent acquisition occurred. Xhaka faces potential legal consequences, including fines or imprisonment of up to five years under Swiss law. The investigation also involves a doctor, Andrea L., who is suspected of issuing certificates without administering doses. However, the doctor has denied the allegations, asserting that Xhaka was indeed vaccinated according to protocol.
Following his confession, the Swiss Football Association (ASF) announced that Xhaka will be excluded from the national team's upcoming UEFA Nations League matches. The association will re-evaluate his status after the international period. Xhaka is scheduled to be questioned by investigators in early October.
