Granito Mayor George de Sidney leaves Workers' Party amid domestic violence allegations
George de Sidney, the mayor of Granito in Pernambuco, has been disaffiliated from the Workers' Party (PT) following allegations of domestic violence made by his ex-wife, Raila Miranda. The party announced the disaffiliation on social media, stating that while Sidney requested to leave, the party was simultaneously initiating an urgent ethical-disciplinary process.
Miranda released video footage showing bruises and cuts to her face and head, alleging that the assaults occurred approximately 20 days ago following the end of their relationship. She stated that her seven-year-old son witnessed the violence and reported also suffering from patrimonial violence. Miranda emphasized her intent to use her voice to support other women facing similar fears.
In response, Sidney released a statement noting that the facts will be handled through legal channels and expressed a commitment to the truth and justice. He also stated his intention to seek legal means to preserve his relationship with his son. The Civil Police of Pernambuco (PCPE) has confirmed they are investigating the case.
