Granma launches winter planting campaign amid fuel shortages

The winter planting season, known as the ‘Campaña de Frío’, has officially commenced in the Granma province of Cuba. Running through February, the campaign aims to boost the production of tubers and other essential crops to ensure local food security.

Due to significant fuel shortages, agricultural workers are increasingly relying on traditional methods and animal traction to compensate for the lack of machinery and transport. The province plans to utilize approximately 10,000 teams of oxen, along with 4,200 mules, 100 buffaloes, and 42,000 horses to assist with field labor and resource transport.

To mitigate the scarcity of conventional technological inputs, authorities are promoting the use of organic fertilizers and bio-inputs. The initiative involves all 13 municipalities in Granma, with formal kickoff events held in areas such as the Cautillo-Bejuquero productive pole and Bartolomé Masó.
