Grape harvest in Garraf begins early amid heatwaves and pricing crisis

The grape harvest in the Garraf region has begun earlier than usual due to recent heatwaves. While winter rains initially suggested a strong yield, a four-month lack of precipitation has resulted in smaller grapes, leading to an estimated harvest reduction of 25% to 40% compared to last year.

Agricultural organization La Unió Llauradora has denounced initial purchase prices for white grapes intended for Cava production, stating they fall significantly below production costs. Current market quotes are reported around €0.25 to €0.30 per kilogram, whereas production costs are estimated between €0.50 and €0.60 per kilogram.

Producers have expressed concern regarding commercial formulas that may mask the true price received, noting that some arrangements might result in only 70% of the grape being paid at the announced rate, with the remainder potentially receiving as little as €0.12 per kilogram. The sector faces additional pressures from rising fuel costs and export tariff issues in the United States.
