GrapheneOS to expand support to Motorola flagship smartphones in 2027

GrapheneOS, the privacy-focused open-source mobile operating system, has announced plans to expand its hardware support to high-end Motorola smartphones starting in 2027. This move marks the end of the project's long-standing exclusivity to Google Pixel devices.

Initial development will target a standard slab-style Motorola flagship. Support for foldable devices, such as the Motorola Razr Ultra and Razr Fold, is expected to follow later. Supported handsets will receive seven years of operating system and security updates.

The expansion requires strict hardware criteria. Motorola engineers will provide official firmware and direct driver access to assist development. To meet GrapheneOS requirements, devices must feature advanced protections such as mature hardware Memory Tagging Extensions (MTE), secure element isolation, and reset-attack protection for firmware boot modes. Consequently, the project will target premium devices using next-generation Qualcomm Snapdragon processors rather than budget models, which often lack the necessary microchip protections and long-term support cycles.
