Grass fires destroy multiple homes in Suriname

A series of grass fires has resulted in the total destruction of multiple residential properties across Suriname. In Paramaribo, a fire on Papitodostraat, which originated from a grass fire, destroyed a house constructed of wood and zinc sheets, as well as a nearby small building. No injuries were reported in this incident.

In separate incidents on the same day, grass fires at Papitodoweg in Rijsdijk and Javaweg in Lelydorp also spread to wooden homes, causing both to burn down completely. Police spokesperson Michael Elskamp confirmed these events, noting that while no personal injuries occurred, the property damage is significant.

Authorities have warned that these incidents follow a pattern of increasing danger during the dry season. Deputy Fire Chief Olton Pinas noted that prolonged drought and the practice of lighting refuse fires can easily escalate into uncontrollable grass fires. Previous incidents in September also saw significant losses, including a fire that destroyed a home, a business, and nineteen vehicles.
