Grasshopper Manufacture to become independent from NetEase Games

Grasshopper Manufacture, the Tokyo-based video game developer led by Goichi ‘Suda51’ Suda, has announced its independence from NetEase Games, effective October 1, 2026. The decision follows the release of the studio’s latest title, ‘Romeo Is A Dead Man’, and its 28th anniversary.

The studio aims to return to its roots as an independent developer to pursue a wider variety of gaming styles and experiences. Having developed self-publishing expertise in recent years, the company intends to utilize a broader range of distribution options for its future projects.

NetEase Games acquired Grasshopper Manufacture from GungHo Online Entertainment in 2021. According to the announcement, the separation was reached through thorough discussions and the cooperation of NetEase. Both companies stated that they maintain a positive relationship and remain open to future collaborations.
