Grassroots dialogue initiatives promote social connection in Switzerland and Germany

Individual initiatives in Switzerland and Germany are promoting social cohesion through spontaneous, face-to-face dialogue.

In Switzerland, Antje and Caren Waterholter founded the association ‘Erzähl doch mal’ (Tell Me More). They operate a ‘listening wagon’—a small mobile space equipped with seating and resources to facilitate personal encounters. Since its launch in October 2025, the project has hosted over 100 meetings. The initiative works with various organizations, including the city of Winterthur and several religious communities, to provide a non-denominational space for conversation.

In Bergisch Gladbach, Germany, retired teacher Mechthild Burgmer hosts weekly spontaneous conversations on the market square. Using a simple sign that asks, ‘What moves you? An invitation to talk,’ she engages passersby to foster respect and appreciation. Burgmer emphasizes that her goal is not political or religious persuasion, but rather to combat social division by listening to people’s concerns and maintaining respect even when views differ.
