Grassy Narrows First Nation supporters march in Toronto for mercury justice

Approximately 9,000 people marched through Toronto on September 23 for the Grassy Narrows River Run, a protest seeking justice for the Grassy Narrows First Nation. Community members traveled roughly 1,700 kilometers to participate in the march from Grange Park to Queen’s Park.

The demonstration addresses a mercury crisis stemming from the release of approximately nine tonnes of mercury into the English-Wabigoon river system during the 1960s and 1970s, linked to the Dryden Mill. Decades later, high mercury levels in fish continue to necessitate consumption advisories, and it is estimated that roughly 90 percent of the Grassy Narrows population shows signs of mercury poisoning.

Organizers and supporters, including the United Church of Canada and KAIROS Canada, are calling on provincial and federal governments to provide fair compensation to affected residents. Key demands include shutting down the Dryden Mill, halting mining and nuclear waste plans that threaten the area, and providing support to restore the community’s way of life.
