Gravas school complex suspended due to gas odor reports
The Athens Municipal Council has unanimously decided to suspend in-person operations at the Gravas school complex due to persistent reports of a strong gas-like odor. To ensure student and staff safety, all educational activities will transition to distance learning via Webex until further notice.
Athens Mayor Charis Doukas has called upon the relevant ministry, the Technical Chamber of Greece (TEE), and specialized companies to complete exhaustive technical inspections. He requested that final results be delivered by Sunday, stating, ‘We are not playing with the safety of our children.’
The issue stems from reports of odors dating back to mid-September, with a significant incident occurring on October 2 that led to a precautionary evacuation of approximately 400 teachers and numerous students. While initial inspections by Enaon EDA did not detect an active gas leak, concerns remain regarding the heating system, boiler, and gas network. Technical teams will continue working through the weekend to verify the integrity of the installations.
