Gravas school complex remains closed due to gas odor investigation

Schools in the Gravas complex in Athens remain closed following reports of a gas odor, with approximately 4,000 students transitioning to distance learning. While multiple technical inspections by gas companies and municipal technicians have found no active gas leaks, the exact source of the odor remains unidentified.

Athens Mayor Charis Doukas has criticized the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Civil Protection for a lack of involvement, calling for the immediate intervention of the Technical Chamber of Greece (TEE) to conduct independent safety audits. Although inspections of the internal piping networks were completed, discrepancies between current installations and approved technical studies were noted, preventing the issuance of standard safety certificates. Specifically, certain components, such as a flexible anti-vibration connector at the 40th Gymnasium and Lyceum, require replacement before the gas supply can be fully restored.

Authorities have suspended gas supply to the school burners as a precaution. The schools will remain closed until official written guarantees regarding the safety of the facilities are provided by the relevant technical services.
