Gravity Media and Bifrost test 25G QC transceiver for broadcast transport
Gravity Media and Bifrost Communications have collaborated to test a 25G Quasi-Coherent (QC) pluggable optical transceiver designed for long-distance SMPTE ST 2110 broadcast media transport. The technology aims to provide a cost-effective solution for deploying Ethernet and optical networks in the broadcast industry.
Bifrost has developed what it describes as the industry’s first 25G DWDM SFP28 pluggable transceiver. The device features a compact SFP28 footprint, ultra-low latency, and low power consumption. Its DSP-free architecture allows for improved chromatic dispersion tolerance and an extended reach of up to 40km.
The technology is expected to support various applications, including outside broadcasts, sporting events, stadium networks, distributed AI infrastructure, and mobile fronthaul. By utilizing semi-tunable laser technology, the platform seeks to bridge the gap between traditional IM-DD optics and conventional coherent transmission systems without the high power requirements of standard coherent solutions.
