Gravity Well and Ninja Theory face crises amid tightening gaming industry capital

The video game industry is facing a tightening capital cycle, as evidenced by the recent struggles of Gravity Well and Ninja Theory.

Gravity Well, a studio founded in 2020 by former Respawn Entertainment veterans Drew McCoy and Jon Shiring, has laid off more than 40 employees after losing its funding this summer. Despite developing a new Unreal Engine 5 IP, the studio has been unable to secure new investment or partnerships. Leadership has stated that while a small team remains to continue operations and seek funding, the studio’s future remains uncertain.

Simultaneously, Microsoft’s first-party studio Ninja Theory is facing potential closure. Following failed attempts to facilitate two independent acquisition deals intended to save the studio, Xbox has initiated consultation processes regarding layoffs and closure. This comes despite the studio’s work on the upcoming title ‘Senua’, which was showcased earlier this year.

These developments suggest a shift in investor sentiment, where high-cost, long-cycle AAA projects are increasingly viewed as high-risk assets rather than guaranteed returns, regardless of the pedigree of the developers or the established nature of the intellectual property.
