Kootenay family seeks support after Stage 4 brain cancer diagnosis
A family in Gray Creek, Kootenay, has launched a GoFundMe campaign to assist with travel and living expenses following John Tallman’s diagnosis of aggressive grade 4 astrocytoma, a type of Stage 4 brain cancer. Tallman, 38, previously fought and beat the cancer twice approximately four years ago, but the disease returned in July 2026.
Tallman underwent brain surgery at Foothills Hospital in Calgary in early September and is preparing for intensive radiation treatment. His wife, Kalista Pruden, is managing their three children while seeking community support to manage the costs of traveling from their remote, rural community for medical care. The family has set a fundraising goal of $12,000 and has raised $7,300 to date. Doctors have provided a life expectancy of approximately 12 to 18 months.
