Gray wolf activity remains concentrated in northwest Colorado

Gray wolf activity in Colorado remained concentrated in the northwestern region throughout August. According to Colorado Parks and Wildlife, the area contains the territories for all four of the state’s reproducing packs, as well as a fifth non-reproducing pack.

Activity was recorded across multiple watersheds, including segments of Jackson, Grand, Routt, Rio Blanco, Eagle, Mesa, Delta, Gunnison, Summit, Pitkin, Garfield, and Chaffee counties. GPS data, recorded approximately every four hours, also indicated wolf movement near the state borders with Wyoming and Utah.

While Colorado maintains agreements with Utah, New Mexico, and Arizona to capture and return wolves that cross state lines, wolves entering Wyoming lose their state and federal protections and may be hunted.
