Grayscale argues AI makes cryptocurrency privacy more urgent
Grayscale Research suggests that the rise of artificial intelligence is making cryptocurrency privacy more critical. In a recent analysis for CoinDesk, Michael Zhao argues that while the transparency of blockchains like Bitcoin was previously manageable, AI has significantly lowered the cost and time required to link anonymous wallet addresses to specific individuals.
AI models can efficiently analyze large volumes of public blockchain data, cross-referencing transaction patterns with social media or other data leaks to deanonymize users. This shift is described as a “third wave” of financial privacy concerns, following the digitalization of bank records and the advent of the internet.
Zcash is highlighted as a potential solution due to its use of zero-knowledge proofs, which allow for “shielded transactions.” These enable the network to verify payments without revealing the sender, receiver, or amount. Zcash offers optional privacy, allowing users to use transparent addresses or provide viewing keys to auditors and regulators without relinquishing control of their funds.
