Grayscale enables in-kind crypto swaps for 10 investment products
Grayscale has launched in-kind investing for 10 of its cryptocurrency exchange-traded products (ETPs), allowing eligible investors to swap digital assets directly for fund shares. This mechanism bypasses the traditional requirement to sell cryptocurrency for cash before purchasing shares, potentially reducing trading costs and slippage.
The rollout includes products such as the Grayscale Bitcoin Mini Trust ETF, Ethereum Staking Mini ETF, Solana Staking ETF, XRP Trust ETF, and others covering assets like Dogecoin, Avalanche, and Zcash. Transactions are processed through authorized participants, which are large trading firms responsible for the creation and redemption of ETF shares.
Grayscale cited increasing cybersecurity threats from self-custody and DeFi exploits as a primary driver for this move, noting that regulated custody offers a more secure way to manage holdings. Additionally, the in-kind structure may offer tax advantages for certain investors by potentially avoiding immediate capital gains recognition under specific trust structures. Minimum investment thresholds vary significantly by product, ranging from approximately $80,300 for Solana to over $364,800 for the Bitcoin Mini Trust.
