Graz economic councillor René Apfelknab announces policy shift

René Apfelknab of the FPÖ has assumed his role as the new economic councillor for Graz, overseeing the economic, tourism, veterinary, and animal welfare portfolios. Apfelknab has pledged a shift in policy toward a stronger economic focus, aiming to improve conditions for businesses by reducing bureaucracy, accelerating administrative procedures, and enhancing infrastructure. He intends to position the city administration as a more proactive partner for companies to secure jobs and attract new enterprises.

Tourism is also a key pillar of his strategy, with Apfelknab noting the potential for growth in sectors such as gastronomy and trade following increased visitor numbers.

In a related development, Styrian Governor Mario Kunasek expressed a desire for increased synergy between the state and the city under the new administration. However, Kunasek criticized the lack of progress regarding the modernization of the football stadium in Liebenau. He called on the Graz city government to present a comprehensive concept—including structural, infrastructural, and operational plans—involving the clubs SK Sturm and GAK before the state can consider providing support.
