Graz municipal council election campaign intensifies

Graz prepares for its municipal council election on 28 June, with parties entering the final days of campaigning. The FPÖ held a rally on the main square, urging “less bureaucracy, less regulation, more freedom” and featuring party leader Herbert Kickl. The Greens highlighted a “green or grey” choice for voters, citing 20,000 door‑to‑door visits.

The Communist Party (KPÖ) intensified its outreach, setting up information stands across the city and stressing the personal connection of mayor Elke Kahr with residents. Campaigners quoted Kahr’s message: “Every vote counts!” and warned that “surveys are just smoke and mirrors.”

Mayor Kahr reiterated she will continue working with the Greens and SPÖ but “excludes a coalition with the ÖVP” due to perceived arrogance. She emphasized transport policies, supporting public transport, expanding cycling infrastructure and addressing parking shortages. Several parties also commented on local issues such as mountain‑bike trail development.

The election is framed as a decisive test for the KPÖ, which currently leads in local polls, while all parties promise to address rising living costs, traffic congestion and municipal services.
