Graz Mayor Elke Kahr Retains Office as Communist Party Wins 35% Vote

The Communist Party of Austria (KPÖ) surged to 35.7 % of the vote in Graz's municipal election, delivering a decisive victory and allowing 65‑year‑old incumbent Elke Kahr to remain mayor of Austria's second‑largest city. The result gave the KPÖ a clear plurality over the ÖVP (25.3 %), the Greens (14.9 %), the FPÖ (12.0 %), the SPÖ (5.6 %) and NEOS (4.9 %). Kahr, who has led the city since 2021, emphasized her continued focus on social services, education and health, while acknowledging the city's €2 billion debt and the need for a budget consolidation plan. In the coming days the KPÖ will enter talks with all parties, including the ÖVP, to form a governing coalition for the next five years.

Kahr stressed a pragmatic, service‑oriented approach, noting that her personal contact with residents contributed to the party's resurgence. The election marks a rare communist success in a Western European city and sets the stage for coalition negotiations that will shape Graz's fiscal and social policies amid ongoing financial constraints.
