Graz municipal council faces record low voter turnout

The recent municipal election in Graz recorded an exceptionally low voter turnout, raising concerns about the legitimacy of the council’s mandate. The three‑party coalition that retained a narrow majority was urged to address the “high non‑voting rate,” which threatens democratic processes. Party leaders were advised to investigate why only about half of eligible voters participated and to develop strategies to re‑engage citizens.

Commentators warned that “an extremely low turnout is not only a danger to liberal democracy, it delegitimises the results of democratic decision‑making.” The coalition, which prioritises social policy and sustainable mobility, was encouraged to consider cooperation projects with opposition parties to improve public trust and voter participation in future elections.
