Graz municipal election sees high voter interest ahead of Sunday vote

A new poll of almost 226,000 eligible voters in Graz shows that 65 % intend to cast a ballot in the municipal election on Sunday, potentially breaking the 60 % turnout mark for the first time since 2003. The survey also notes that 80 % of pensioners and 70 % of men say they will definitely vote, while only 56 % are following the campaign with any curiosity.

The election is the biggest political event in Austria this year, with incumbent communist mayor Elke Kahr leading the polls. An ORF‑hosted “Elefantenrunde” brought together the leading candidates from the ÖVP, FPÖ, SPÖ, Greens, Neos, KFG and KPÖ, who debated the city’s heavy debt burden, fiscal reforms and the aftermath of the 2021 financial scandal that weakened the FPÖ. The ÖVP is under pressure to mobilise its base, while the KFG—formed from the anti‑corruption club—seeks to enter the council. Discussions highlighted diverging views on spending cuts, investment in transport and public services, and the prospects for coalition building after the vote.
