Surgeons at the LKH-Universitätsklinikum Graz have successfully removed an 18-kilogram, 40-centimeter tumor from a 50-year-old woman. The tumor, which originated from her left ovary, had expanded to fill nearly her entire abdominal cavity and was displacing her organs.
The patient was initially treated at LKH Oststeiermark in Hartberg, where a CT scan revealed the massive growth following months of increasing abdominal discomfort. Due to the extraordinary size of the tumor, she was transferred to Graz for specialized care.
A medical team of eleven specialists performed the three-hour surgery using an incision extending from the sternum to the pubic bone. Pathological analysis confirmed the growth was a benign cystadenofibroma. The patient is reported to be in good health and has been discharged from the hospital.
