Grazalema to host historical reenactment of 'El Tempranillo' legend
The town of Grazalema will host the 18th edition of ‘Sangre y amor en la Sierra’ from October 2 to 4. The event is a historical reenactment organized by the Asociación Cultural Recreación Histórica ‘Bandoleros de Grazalema’ to commemorate the life and tragic romance of the 19th-century outlaw José María Hinojosa, known as ‘El Tempranillo’, and María Jerónima Francés.
In recent years, the event has attracted approximately 15,000 attendees. The reenactment involves dozens of actors and extras dressed in period clothing, aiming to preserve the cultural and emotional identity of the Sierra de Cádiz region. Local officials noted that the event helps promote inland tourism during the month of October, aiding in the seasonal diversification of the province's tourism sector.
The historical narrative focuses on the year 1832, when the legendary bandit—often compared to Robin Hood for sharing spoils with the poor—married María Jerónima in Grazalema. The story concludes with a historical tragedy involving ‘Los Migueletes’, troops sent to capture him, which resulted in the death of his wife.
