Grazia Deledda: 90 years since the death of the Nobel laureate

Ninety years after her death on August 15, 1936, the legacy of Grazia Deledda remains a cornerstone of European literature. As the only Italian woman to have won the Nobel Prize for Literature, Deledda achieved international acclaim through works that blended Verismo with Decadentism.

Born in Nuoro, Deledda was forced to abandon her formal education after the fourth grade due to the patriarchal social constraints of the era. Despite this, she pursued knowledge through reading and private lessons, eventually publishing acclaimed novels such as ‘Canne al Vento’ and ‘Cosima’.

Her writing transformed the anthropological reality of the Nuorese and Barbagia regions into eternal literary metaphors. Her themes—including guilt, social conventions, destiny, and the struggle for freedom—continue to resonate globally, transcending her regional roots to achieve a lasting intellectual impact.
