Gràcia celebrates 2026 Festa Major with decorated streets contest
The Gràcia neighborhood in Barcelona is preparing for its annual Festa Major, a week-long celebration held in mid-August. A central highlight of the festivities is the decorated streets contest, involving 23 streets and squares that transform into themed environments such as enchanted forests, pirate ships, or literary settings.
For the 2026 edition, five commissions have collaborated to create a shared theme based on ‘The Lord of the Rings’ by Tolkien, spanning several streets. The event, which has a history dating back to 1920, features over 900 free activities, including concerts, parades, and traditional ‘Castellers’ performances.
Key scheduled events include the official proclamation by journalist and historian Vicenç Sanclemente on August 14, followed by various cultural parades. New initiatives for 2026 include a dedicated family space for children at Plaça d’en Joanic and a ‘quiet night’ on August 17 to reduce noise disturbances through low-intensity activities.
