Grödner Joch to begin digital traffic test phase in September 2026

A digital test phase for traffic management at the Grödner Joch is scheduled to begin in September 2026. Contrary to previous expectations of physical closures, the pass will remain fully accessible to cars, motorcycles, motorhomes, and buses during this period. There will be no physical barriers, police controls, or fines issued during the 2026 test.

The project aims to create Italy’s first Territorial Traffic Calmed Zone (TVZ UNESCO) to relieve pressure on the UNESCO World Heritage site and the surrounding valleys of Gröden and Gadertal. Instead of physical restrictions, the phase will focus on collecting and simulating real-world traffic data to evaluate different models for future access rights and limitations.

Authorities will use this data to determine how to implement permanent traffic calming measures starting in 2027. The study will assess the need for infrastructure such as roundabouts, control points, or priority lanes to ensure that traffic reduction at the pass does not simply shift congestion to neighboring towns. Digital solutions, including registration platforms for guests of local accommodation providers, are also being developed as part of the administrative framework.
