Great Britain construction material demand projected to decline through 2026
Demand for heavyside construction materials, including aggregates, concrete, asphalt, and mortar, is projected to fall for a fifth consecutive year in 2026. According to a report by the Mineral Products Association (MPA), a ‘meaningful recovery’ in the sector is not anticipated until 2028.
A primary factor contributing to this downturn is the prolonged decline in new-build housing activity. The MPA report indicates that future growth in mineral products demand will likely depend on infrastructure delivery, specifically investments in energy generation and water and sewerage projects. Such projects are expected to support activity in Scotland, Wales, and the east of England.
MPA economist Luke George noted that while construction is often discussed nationally, market conditions and growth opportunities vary significantly by region. The association emphasized that mineral products are essential for delivering homes and infrastructure and are fundamental to driving economic growth.
